Naomi Sims (1948-2009) is without a doubt one of the first African American super models. She was the first African American woman to grace a cover of a major magazine in 1968 with Ladies’ Home Journal. At a time of civil unrest in North America proving that black is indeed beautiful. In 1969 Sims went on to cover Life magazine. Retiring in 1973 she decided to pursue new ventures including authoring several books, wig line, and a cosmetic line. Namoi Sims passed away in August 2009 of breast cancer and is survived by her only son Bob Findlay and grand daughter.
