Move over Yeezy and Jay. Sunday night Leila Lopes, Miss Angola beat 88 other contestants for the crown as Miss Universe in Sao Paulo Brazil! 25-year- old Lopes is the first winner of Miss Angola to take the Miss Universe crown. Judges were enamored by her beautiful cream gown, fluent speaking of Portuguese, and the answer to one of the final questions.
When asked “if you could change one of your physical characteristics what would it be and why?” In Portuguese Lopes responded, “Thank God I’m very satisfied with the way God created me, and I wouldn’t change a thing…I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family, and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life.”
It is great to see a beautiful woman of color awarded for being comfortable with herself enough to state in front of the world that she is happy with who she is inside and out! At a time when many women and teenagers lack self-confidence in themselves Miss Angola reminds us why we should be proud and happy with who we are and what God has given us. There has not been an African beauty queen since 1999 when Miss Botswana, Mpule Kwelagobe won the Miss Universe crown. Check out the video below for a taste of the 2011 Miss Universe experience.
